Dr. Diann M. Krywko is a distinguished academic physician leader with over 28 years of experience in emergency medicine, administrative leadership, and medical education. She currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and as Secretary on the MUSC-P Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. Dr. Krywko is a champion of servant leadership, committed to advancing clinical care, fostering innovative education, and promoting groundbreaking research initiatives.
Dr. Krywko earned her medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit and completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Michigan. Her career is marked by numerous certifications and accolades, including the inaugural 2024 American Academy of Women Emergency Physicians (AAWEP) Catalyst Award for advancing women in emergency medicine, the 2021 University of Michigan Emergency Medicine Alumni Award for Excellence in Education, the 2019 AAWEP Outstanding Mentor Award, and the ACEP 2017 National Emergency Medicine Teaching Award. In 2024, she completed the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) fellowship with a project titled “Developing a Philanthropic Culture in Emergency Medicine.” Her leadership vision centers on expanding fellowship programs, improving patient care through innovation, and cultivating workplace wellness.
Dr. Krywko has made significant contributions to wellness and resilience in medicine. As the Director of Wellness, Health, and Resilience for Emergency Medicine at MUSC, she spearheaded initiatives addressing workplace violence and provider well-being. Her research focuses on organizational wellness, violence prevention, and women in leadership, with 43 publications (including 21 peer-reviewed articles), 11 book chapters, and contributions to renowned texts such as Roberts and Hedges’ Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine. She is a sought-after speaker, delivering hundreds of keynotes and panel discussions on topics such as burnout, resilience, professional development, and women in leadership at international, national, regional, and local conferences.
In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Krywko is an accomplished educator. She has served as an Assistant Residency Director and delivered more than 150 lectures to residents and students, emphasizing clinical skills, leadership development, and professional growth. Her editorial expertise includes roles with the Journal of Wellness, Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Krywko’s national contributions include leadership roles with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), and the Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine (AACEM). She co-chaired the ACEP Well Workplace Policy Committee and played a pivotal role in initiatives like the #StopTheStigma campaign, which promotes mental health awareness among emergency physicians.
