Biography
Dr. Smith received his Honors B.A. from the University of Delaware and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University. He completed his internship at the Charleston Consortium and his postdoctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina's National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center (NCVC). After a three-year stay on the faculty of the University of Arkansas Department of Psychology, he returned to the NCVC, where he served as Director of Training for 13 years. His current research activities focus on the impact of traumatic stress on children and families, and the use of technology to disseminate training in evidence-based treatments to mental health professionals. Along with his NCVC colleagues, he has developed 5 web-based training courses, including TFCBTWeb (2005-2012) and TFCBTWeb2.0 (2018-present). He frequently serves as a research preceptor for psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows. His research areas include measuring the impact that familial support exerts on child adjustment following trauma; the evaluation of psychotherapy training delivered via technology; the epidemiology of youth trauma exposure and its effects on development; and methods for improving participant diversity in clinical trials. In addition to these activities, Dr. Smith currently serves as Co-Director for the Charleston Consortium Psychology Internship program and as Gender Equity Advisor to the Medical University of South Carolina's Title IX Office.
