Cost of Attendance

As you plan your MUSC journey, use this page to understand your Cost of Attendance and review estimated program costs.

Your Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of what it may cost to attend MUSC for one academic year. it includes direct costs, such as tuition and fees, as well as estimated indirect costs, such as housing, food, transportation, books, supplies and personal expenses.

This estimate helps determine your financial aid eligibility and the maximum amount you may borrow for the academic year. Your actual costs may vary based on your program, enrollment status, residency status, housing choices and personal expenses.

Cost of Attendance is not a bill.

It is a planning tool used to help you estimate and understand your potential educational costs and financial aid eligibility.

Understanding your Cost of Attendance

Before you review your program costs, it may help to understand how MUSC builds your Cost of Attendance and how financial aid may apply to different types of expenses. These estimates are designed to support planning, but they will not reflect every individual circumstance.

What COA includes

Cost of Attendance includes both direct and indirect costs.

Direct costs are expenses billed by MUSC, such as tuition, required fees and required insurance. Indirect costs are estimated expenses you may have while enrolled, such as housing, food, transportation, books, supplies and personal expenses.

MUSC develops this estimate because federal financial aid guidelines require universities to create a standard student budget for students who receive financial aid. Your Cost of Attendance helps determine your financial aid eligibility and the maximum amount you may borrow for the academic year.

Careful budgeting can help you reduce your indirect costs and limit the amount you need to borrow.

What financial aid may cover

Financial aid may help cover educational expenses included in your COA. These may include:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Housing and food
  • Personal expenses
  • Books, equipment and supplies
  • Transportation
  • Required student health, disability and liability insurance
  • Eligible child care costs, when applicable

MUSC includes mandatory set expenses, such as tuition, required fees and required insurance, in your COA. Child care costs may be considered for students who are single parents with dependent children or students whose spouse works outside the home.

What financial aid may not cover

Some expenses cannot be included in your COA, even if they are part of your personal budget. In general, financial aid cannot cover prior debt, major personal purchases, family or household expenses, lifestyle expenses, or costs outside your academic enrollment period.

Examples may include:

  • Moving expenses, including apartment security deposits and utility setup costs
  • Credit card debt or other consumer debt
  • Car purchases, payments or leases
  • Expenses for children, a spouse, pets, roommates or other family members
  • Furniture purchases
  • A down payment on a home
  • Summer living expenses
  • Homeowners association fees, regime fees, landscaping or home maintenance
  • Organization memberships, including student memberships and health clubs
  • Charitable contributions
  • Gifts or tithes
  • Investments
  • Replacement or supplementation of lost or reduced wages
  • Wedding or engagement expenses
  • Vacations, leisure travel or mission trips
  • Life, homeowner's or renter's insurance
  • Expenses outside the academic year
  • Expenses already paid by another source
  • Costs related to insufficient credit or inability to obtain a co-signer
  • Legal fees, bail, traffic or parking tickets, fines or drug testing
  • Costs associated with living beyond your means
  • Veterinary costs, unless related to a service animal
  • Matriculation fees and enrollment deposits

Financial aid can only cover eligible educational expenses. If you are unsure whether an expense may be included, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid before making financial decisions based on aid eligibility.

When your aid may change

Your financial aid may need to be reviewed if the total amount you receive from all sources is greater than your COA. This is called an over award.

An over award may happen if you receive funding that was not included when your initial financial aid award was processed. Examples may include outside scholarships, stipends, grants or other awards.

Your aid may also need to be reviewed if your residency status changes from out of state to in state or if your enrollment changes from full time to less than full time.

If an over award occurs, the Office of Student Financial Aid must review your eligibility and may need to adjust your financial aid so your total aid package remains within federal guidelines.

To help prevent changes later, notify the Office of Student Financial Aid in writing if you receive funding that is not already listed on your financial aid award letter.

Family and child care expenses

Your COA can only include your educational expenses. Expenses for a spouse or children generally cannot be included.

Students should not plan to use financial aid to cover their family’s full household expenses or to replace or supplement a spouse’s wages. Child care is the only exception. If your spouse works outside the home, or if you are a single parent with dependent children, MUSC may review your eligibility for an adjustment to help cover child care costs.

Cost of Attendance

The Cost of Attendance, or COA, is an estimate of a student's total educational expenses for an enrollment period. The information below reflects the 2026-27 academic year. The COA includes tuition and fees, which are direct costs billed to you by the university, as well as indirect costs you may incur, including food, housing, transportation, books, etc.

The COA is important because it reflects the maximum amount a student may borrow in an academic year to attend the program.

With careful budgeting, students can substantially lower their indirect costs, so their actual expenses are well below the COA. MUSC's Office of Student Financial Literacy can help students develop a budget that supports their educational and personal financial goals.
