E’lise Nissen, MS, serves as the director of Artificial Intelligence in Education and Scholarship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where she helps faculty and students use AI safely, ethically and effectively, and guides academic programs through the changes it is bringing to health professions education.
Nissen brings AI literacy resources to the MUSC community and works with faculty to identify where students must do the hard thinking themselves, where AI can help and how to teach the enduring AI skills students will need in their professions. As a member of the MUSC team that developed the AI Acceptable Use Framework for Academic Tasks, she studies how faculty can use it to show students when AI belongs in their work and why, based on what each assignment is designed to teach and assess.
As chair of MUSC’s AI Education Committee, Nissen helps shape how AI in education is governed at MUSC, setting clear expectations and safeguards for its use. She also leads pilots of emerging educational technologies and helps faculty study AI through the scholarship of teaching and learning, exploring how these tools can make education more effective, efficient, enjoyable and connected.
Nissen holds a Master of Science in Instructional Design and Learning Technology from Franklin University and has more than a decade of experience in curriculum and assessment.
