The 10-day training is designed for nursing students to gain an immersive experience in a diverse range of global health topics and work with an inter-professional team at various FIMRC sites in foreign countries through a virtual platform. Topics relate to the global burden of disease, social determinants of health, ethical considerations, essential nursing care practices and challenges worldwide, monitoring of non-communicable diseases, and clinical services. Other site-specific topics will be added as needed.
This breadth of knowledge will empower students to advance their nursing career goals and lead efforts to address the needs of medically underserved and vulnerable populations both locally and internationally.
The experience also includes virtual clinical observation opportunities at the international sites, case study investigations and discussions, thematic article readings/discussions, weekly roundups, and project development and implementation that will directly impact the foreign site initiatives. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in local foreign language classes, virtual country-specific cooking, excursion, and homestay tours for complete cultural immersion.
Additionally, the College of Nursing will also partner with FIMRC to offer in-person global health travel opportunities to nursing students providing a hands-on experience in global health and are hopeful to resume those programs in the coming year when travel restrictions are lifted.
