Honorary Degrees

The Office of the Provost solicits nominations for individuals to receive honorary degrees from the Medical University of South Carolina. Honorary degrees are awarded at Commencement.

The honorary degree is one of higher education's most significant accolades. MUSC’s honorary degrees are aimed at recognizing and honoring distinguished individuals who have made an extraordinary and positive impact in education, science, or health care in the state of South Carolina or nationally. Individuals considered for nominations should have a history of connection and/or employment at MUSC. Current MUSC employees are not eligible.

The list of MUSC’s honorary degree holders includes some of the most accomplished names in science, business, art, politics, philanthropy, and public service: U.S. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, physician and novelist Ferrol Sams, Charleston police chief Rueben Greenberg, Vice President George H.W. Bush, businesswoman Anita G. Zucker, and Dr. Albert B. Sabin, developer of the oral live-virus polio vaccine, to name a few. Their achievements in the service of mankind reflect the values and drive we seek to instill in each of our students.

Nominations should be in one of the following categories:

  • Contributions to education, science, and/or health care
  • Contributions to the state of South Carolina and/or MUSC
  • Contributions to the nation

* Preference will be given to candidates with a connection to the state of South Carolina and/or MUSC.

Nominations should include a formal letter, no more than 3-4 pages, explaining how the nominee meets the criteria and why his/her contributions are significant and worthy of this distinctive honor.

The window for nominations is June 1 to August 1 each year. To submit a nomination, please complete the form below.

Thank you for your consideration and we look forward to your nominations.
