The Provost's Council at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is the University's central body for academic leadership, planning, and collaboration.

John V. Marymont, M.D., MBA, an orthopaedic surgeon and seasoned academic medical leader, is the tenth executive vice president for Academic Affairs and provost for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Serving as chief academic officer of MUSC, Dr. Marymont oversees its academic enterprise, including its six colleges, and advances its core missions of education and research. In the president's absence, the provost acts as the chief executive officer for MUSC.

He brings nearly 25 years of executive experience across academic health systems, with leadership focused on academic growth, medical education excellence, institutional transformation, and healthcare transition. Before joining MUSC, Dr. Marymont held senior leadership roles at Baylor College of Medicine, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport, and the University of South Alabama.

Dr. Marymont earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Northwestern University and his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He completed his orthopedic residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and advanced orthopedic fellowships at Cleveland Clinic and New England Baptist Hospital. He holds an MBA from Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society as a faculty member and was named a Jones Scholar by the faculty of Rice University’s business school.

What We Do

The Provost's Council serves as a collaborative platform for advancing MUSC's academic vision. Members work together to:

  • Guide Academic Policy: Review, recommend, and implement policies related to education, faculty affairs, and student success.
  • Align Strategic Goals: Coordinate academic initiatives that support MUSC's institutional strategic plan and mission areas.
  • Promote Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Foster cross-college partnerships that drive innovation and academic excellence.
  • Support Faculty Development: Discuss strategies to enhance faculty recruitment, retention, mentorship, and professional growth.
  • Oversee Accreditation & Assessment: Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and promote continuous improvement in academic programs.
