Spotlight: MUSC Alumni Association student groups

Alumni Affairs
July 06, 2021

The Medical Student Alumni Council (MSAC) and Dental Student Alumni Council (DSAC), two student councils supported by the MUSC Alumni Affairs office, are composed of community-minded medical and dental students interested in fostering strong relationships amongst the student body and MUSC alumni. Council members serve as liaisons between their colleges and alumni, helping to prepare students for a lifelong relationship with MUSC. Some of their responsibilities include:

  • Attending monthly meetings.
  • Planning and participating in community outreach efforts such as volunteering in MUSC’s Urban Farm, cooking meals at the Ronald McDonald House, organizing fundraisers and more.
  • Coordinating “Dinner with Docs” and “Dinner with Dentists” programs that engage students with alumni and provide an opportunity to foster conversations about career development.
  • Volunteering during alumni reunion weekends hosted by the MUSC Alumni Affairs office.

Despite their rigorous schedules and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, these student alumni councils persevered with determination and creativity to stay engaged in community outreach, fundraising and alumni relations efforts. We are proud of all they have accomplished together this year!

Let’s reflect on a few highlights:

Members of MSAC presented a check to the MUSC CARES Clinic, a student-run nonprofit organization that provides free medical care to uninsured and under-insured patients age 18 and older in the Charleston area. The money was raised during a T-shirt fundraiser held by MSAC members.

Members of DSAC volunteered at the MUSC Urban Farm, a half-acre community farm at the corner of Bee and President Streets on MUSC’s campus. The farm provides a place where students, faculty, staff, patients and the Charleston community can come together to learn about the connection between food and health.
