OSE Annual Report

2023 - 2024 Highlights

Creating Experiences, Building Connections

The Office of Student Engagement (OSE) and the MUSC Student Government Association (SGA) collaborated to host an enriching calendar of campus programming. This past year, our events ranged from educational workshops and wellness initiatives to social gatherings and cultural celebrations, all aimed at fostering a vibrant, inclusive community. Through these efforts, we strive to support the holistic development of our students, ensuring their experience at MUSC is not only educational but also personally fulfilling.

The following data in our annual report highlights the impact and reach of these diverse programs, reflecting our commitment to student engagement and community building.

  • 91% Aggregate Satisfaction Rating for all 2023-2024 OSE and SGA Programs (avg. “Excellent” and “Very Good” ratings)
  • 1470 students attended at least one OSE or SGA program in 2023-2024
  • 45 % of the MUSC student population attended at least one OSE or SGA program in 2023-2024

Developing Student Leaders

In fall 2023, the Office of Student Engagement offered IP 773: Student Leadership Foundations for the second time. Guided by the MUSC Leadership Competencies, students engaged in a course curriculum that promoted deep personal reflection and group dialogue while covering a wide array of leadership topics. Students learned about their own leadership styles and how they work best with others in achieving team and organizational goals. Students also gained a deeper understanding of the connection between leadership, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement.

  • Nine students, representing four academic colleges participated in IP 773.
  • 4.8/5.0 rating on the following course evaluation metrics:
o   “This elective course met my expectations”
o   “Course activities contributed significantly to learning the course material"
o   “The educators were effective teachers"

I really enjoyed all the in-person discussions that we had. It was so easy to see how passionate the professors were about the topics we covered.

Service to our Community!

Each semester OSE and SGA collaborate with American Red Cross for a Student Blood Drive Challenge. Volunteers organize the drive and advocate for blood donor participation. We had 52 donor appointments and collected 46 Units of Blood.

The American Red Cross experienced an emergency blood shortage, and the nation faced the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. Blood and platelet donations were/are needed now to help alleviate the shortage and ensure lifesaving medical procedures are not delayed.

MUSC students served a total of 20,745 hours with the economic impact of $659,718 in 2023-2024!
