The Distinguished Alumnus Service Award is presented to an MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine alumnus who has given selflessly through extraordinary actions that benefit the college, their community, or the profession of dentistry. These actions should reflect a member's contribution in terms of time and expertise. The actions should serve to benefit a deserving population and as an inspiration to others. The recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Alumnus Service Award is Monica Cayouette, D.M.D., Class of 1996.

Cayouette is the department chair of oral rehabilitation at the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, where she also serves as an associate professor and prosthodontist. Cayouette has dedicated her career and countless hours to serving others through dentistry. She has made a tremendous impact through her clinical and educational endeavors, as well as serving on several committees and associations for the betterment of MUSC and the dentistry profession as a whole.

Cayouette’s nominator and colleague shared that she “is great with the students and is always seeking out new ways to educate.”

“I am humbled and honored to accept this alumni award. Since coming to MUSC in 1992 as a student, the College of Dental Medicine has held a special place in my heart. Over the years, the faculty, staff, fellow alumni, students, and residents have grown to be as much a part of my family as anyone else. Because of each of you, I get up each day wanting to continue working for and with the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine as the department chair of Oral Rehabilitation. Each of you inspire me. I encourage you all to stay on course moving the profession of dentistry forward for the greater good. Again, thank you for this great honor. I will cherish it always!”

The Young Alumnus Award is presented to a MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine alumnus who has shown exemplary leadership and dedication towards the college and organized dentistry. The Young Alumnus Award recipient has been in practice for 10 years or less or is under the age of 40. The recipient of the 2020 Young Alumnus Award is Rachel Hymes, D.M.D., Class of 2010.

Hymes is dental director of the Johnson City Community Health Center, which she was instrumental in starting in Johnson City, Tennessee. She has been actively involved in the American Dental Association, the Tennessee Dental Association, her local dental society, and many other forms of organized dentistry. She is also an avid volunteer, generously giving her time and skills to serve those locally and abroad who have little access to dental care and an abundance of dental health needs. Hymes’ nominator shared that “her time at MUSC helped cultivate her love and passion for organized dentistry and her experience as a representative on the national ASDA (American Student Dental Association) board reinforced her commitment to leadership in organized dentistry.”

“I am extremely honored to be given the Young Alumnus Award! My education from MUSC has given me the ability to serve those in need and I could not be more appreciative. I love dentistry and am thankful for the opportunity to be involved in organized dentistry. Organized dentistry has enabled us to all work together to continue to make our career the best it can be. The American Dental Association (ADA) works tirelessly to serve and educate and protect dentists and the public through science and communication and lobbying. During these recent tough times, it has reinforced how important it is to support one another and work together to protect the patients, our staff, and ourselves. We are trusted leaders in our communities, and I am thankful to get to work with leaders from all over the world, brought together through organized dentistry and by our career.

Although my time at MUSC was challenging, it was a tremendous experience. We were continuously challenged and pushed beyond our limits to not only be the best dentists but the best people we can be. We are blessed to have such a wonderful career and I could not be more thankful to MUSC, our professors, and our mentors who have educated and guided us to be the leaders in the community that we are today. Some of the greatest learning moments occurred not only in the clinic but also on mission trips. Our teachers like Dr. Bill Sasser taught us dentistry but also how to serve and give back to our community. The kindness and generosity he, as well as so many of our professors and colleagues showed to all people made a lifelong impact on me. I am thankful for the community of people I met at MUSC and the family that they have become. Being a part of the alumni board while a student also helped to foster the relationships within our alma mater and in dentistry. I couldn't be more thankful for my education at the MUSC College of Dental Medicine.

I could not be more excited and humbled to receive this Young Alumnus Award! I love our career, I love MUSC, and all I love the family that I have gained because of these things! Thank you!”

Congratulations to the 2020 MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine Alumni Awards recipients! We are proud of you and honored to recognize your achievements as MUSC alumni!
