Greetings to the Board. Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you today.

I was excited to see the funds from the charitable giving programs of Waste Management and Phillips Petroleum of which Jim served, have completed their commitment of one Million Dollars to the JBE Oral Surgery Chair. I hope that this is just the beginning.

When we came to MUSC we had 1 ½ chairs. Jim really believed in chairs. You know names on buildings may change but chairs are in perpetuity. Jim told Layton McCurdy (Dean of The College of Medicine) he wanted to have 20 chairs when he left. Layton said, "this man is nuts." Together, we were able to leave 20 Chairs. Jim understood that providing private funds to attract and retain top tier faculty was essential to the mission of the university. As we seek to compete for experts in research and clinical disciplines, and to serve as mentors to the fine men and women who are attracted to careers in dental medicine, these funds will go far to serve the greater interest in dental research and development in South Carolina and beyond.

One of the highest honors and greatest joys of Jim's life was not only to serve as the President of this fine institution, but to have the honor of the new Dental School bearing his name. This chair will further cement the bond and the legacy of his passion for serving others through medical education and research.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Steed for being selected to occupy the first Endowed Chair (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) at The James B. Edwards School of Dental Medicine.

I thank The Board for your giving of your time, efforts and resources to further build on Jim's dream that MUSC will continue to be a world class institution that brings together the brightest and best minds to serve our state and nation.
