Basil and Thelma Cumberbatch Endowed Scholarship Fund

Brasil Cumberbatch, D.M.D, Class of 2001, has established an endowed scholarship through a five-year pledge. When fully endowed in 2028, the Basil and Thelma Cumberbatch Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a newly admitted, qualified dental student who might not have had the highest grade point average, but has overcome a challenge, might need a second chance and has financial need.

When asked about why he decided to provide a permanent scholarship for future dental students, Cumberbatch said:

“While attending the MUSC Bicentennial Alumni Weekend in February 2024, the president of the university addressed us at the dental school barbecue. He challenged us to be there for others in need. He spoke about the MUSC alumni family and that resonated with me. I was inspired to reach out and assist the dental school financially.

My parents were there for me to cover my dental school costs entirely. They placed me in the position I am in today.

As a result, I would like to assist a dental student in fulfilling his or her dreams of becoming a dentist.

I would be remiss if I did not mention mentors such as Dr. Karen Johnson and Dr. Fitzhugh Hamrick. Both individuals inspired, motivated and encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a dentist.

I would like to encourage all alumni, especially the Class of 2001, to do your part in assisting students in need of financial support. MUSC gave us an opportunity and as a result, let us show our appreciation and pay it forward. The Medical University of South Carolina, my alma mater, my home.”
