Alum pledges $50,000
“Remember where you came from. Do something. Give back. Make some kind of commitment. It’s easy.”
The MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine (CDM) recently learned that the college has been awarded the 2019 Gies Award for Innovation by an Academic Dental Institution. This is the first time the college has received this coveted and prestigious institutional award offered to U.S. and Canadian dental institutions.
The William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement recognizes significant contributions to oral health and dental education. The Gies Awards pay tribute to individuals, institutions, and organizations that embody the ideals set forth more than 90 years ago by William J. Gies, Ph.D.
The college is receiving this prestigious award because of its excellence in elevating population oral health through innovative approaches to dental education, practice transformation, and policy analysis. Our Division of Population Oral Health employs a multi-disciplinary team approach to our tripartite mission of research, education, and service. Its dedication to elevating the state’s rural safety net workforce, systems, and the policies that govern them received meritorious recognition by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) through the Gies Award. This national honor recognizes leaders in academic dentistry, such as MUSC, who are modernizing dental education and dental professions in unique and effective ways.
The award will be presented at the 2020 ADEA Annual Session, which will be convened at National Harbor, Maryland, from March 14 through 17, 2020.
