MUSC Alumni Awards James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine 2021 Recipients

The MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine Alumni Association recognizes alumni of the college each year who have made significant contributions to the profession of dentistry, their community, and/or the college.

The Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Service Award is presented to one or more MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine graduates who have given selflessly through extraordinary actions that benefit the college, their community, or the profession of dentistry during the past year. These actions should reflect a member's contributions in terms of time and expertise. The actions should serve to benefit a deserving population and as an inspiration to others. The recipients of the 2021 Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Service Awards are Dr. Isaiah “Ike” Davis ’82 and Dr. Carolyn Brown ’94.

Distinguished Alumnus Award – Dr. Isaiah “Ike” Davis ’82

Isaiah Davis

Dr. Isaiah “Ike” Davis is a native of Columbia, South Carolina, and a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. He formerly served as an assistant dental surgeon with the United States Public Health Service treating underserved populations along the Texas/Mexico border. He also served as director of dental services at Thomason General Hospital, Texas Tech University School of Medicine in El Paso, Texas.

Davis is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the Greater Columbia Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the Congaree Medical Dental Pharmaceutical Association, and he also is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Additionally, Davis volunteers his time and expertise as part of Dental Access Day and Give a Kid a Smile.

As former chairman of the Friends of MUSC Scholarship Alumni Committee, Davis helped fundraise for scholarships for minority students at the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. Davis was invited by the president of the American Dental Association (ADA) to participate in the ADA Institute for Diversity in Leadership. This prestigious 12-month leadership training program was led by faculty members from the renowned Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. In 2019, Dr. Davis received the MUSC Student National Dental Association Achievement in Diversity Award.

Davis has been in private practice in Columbia since 1987. He is a member of Pine Grove AME Church, where he serves as a senior steward and trustee. He is married to Dr. Deborah J. Davis, and they have two children: Dr. Melissa A. Davis and Dr. Isaiah Davis, Jr.  All are graduates of MUSC.

Distinguished Alumna Award – Dr. Carolyn Brown ’94

Carolyn Brown

Dr. Carolyn Brown, a 1994 graduate of the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, currently practices at the Columbia VA Health Care System.

Dr. Brown has dedicated her time and expertise to the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine for the past 26 years, serving as an alumna member of the Student Recruitment and Admissions Committee. She travels to Charleston from Columbia every two weeks to interview the prospective dental students and then spends many hours online attending the committee meetings. She also serves on the Diversity Council and is a role model to students with diverse backgrounds.

She serves as a member of the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry and was elected board president in 2020. Brown has recently been selected to be Commissioner on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) by the American Association of Dental Boards, a significant honor and recognition of her expertise in the practice of dentistry.

Previously, Dr. Brown held leadership positions within several dental associations, including chair of the South Carolina Dental Association Diversity Committee, delegate representing the Central District Dental Association to the South Carolina Dental Association, member of the Palmetto Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association, and executive committee member-at-large for the Alumnae Council at Columbia College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree.

Brown is married to Col. Kelvin Brown, and they are the parents of daughter Loren Brown.

Her nominator shared that Brown “…is a very busy practitioner, and for her to donate so much time in service of the college as an alumna is most noteworthy.”

The Young Alumnus/Alumna Award is presented to one or more MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine graduates who have shown exemplary leadership and dedication toward the college and organized dentistry. The Young Alumnus/Alumna Award recipient has been in practice for 10 or fewer years or is under the age of 40. The recipients of the 2021 Young Alumnus/Alumna Awards are Dr. Daniel Hall ’15 and Dr. Elizabeth Robinson ’11.

Young Alumnus Award – Dr. Daniel Hall ’15

Daniel Hall

Dr. Daniel Hall, a 2015 graduate of the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, is the owner of Williamston Family Dental in Williamston, South Carolina. He previously served as associate dentist at Lawson Family Dental Care and Dr. J.J. Lynn Family Dental Health Care following the completion of his general practice residency at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia in 2016.

Hall has shown exemplary dedication toward the dentistry profession through his many leadership and professional service roles. He currently serves on the American Dental Association (ADA) New Dentist Committee, exploring ways to identify young leaders in dentistry and improve their path to leadership positions. In this role, he also works with the ADA Diversity and Inclusion Committee, working toward improving experiences for dentists of all backgrounds. As a representative of the ADA New Dentist Committee District 16, Hall represents the concerns and interests of new dentists in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia to the American Dental Association’s Board of Directors, serves as an accessible contact person for new graduates and dentists in practice 10 or fewer years, and plans events that provide space and speakers to discuss topics relevant to new dentists. 

Hall is currently the chair of the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA) Committee, serving as the liaison on behalf of the new dentists of South Carolina, voicing concerns that are especially pressing to recent graduates such as student debt management, practice ownership, associate position assessment, establishing work-life balance.

While a dental student, Hall was president of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), serving as the official representative and point of contact for the entire MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine student body regarding interviews and discussions with SCDA, the college’s administration and faculty, and third-party vendors. In this role, he was also responsible for event coordination, budget management, policy interpretation, and implementation. Hall has also served as a member of the Psi Omega Dental Fraternity since 2011.

According to his nominator, Dr. Hall “…is South Carolina's premier young dentist and he continues to make dentistry proud.”

Young Alumna Award – Dr. Elizabeth Robinson ’11

Elizabeth Robinson

Dr. Elizabeth Robinson, a 2011 graduate of the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, has practiced dentistry in her home town of Rock Hill, South Carolina, as a partner at Cranford Dental since 2012.

Robinson earned her bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University. Following dental school at MUSC, she entered the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program at the University of Florida, where she trained in complex dental cases and full mouth restorations.

Robinson is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Tri-County Dental Society, and is the 2021 Central District president-elect of the South Carolina Dental Association. She currently volunteers her time in service of the York County Free Partners in Dentistry, and has previously served as the co-chair of clinical operations for the South Carolina Dental Access Days and volunteering with the York Technical College Dental Advisory Council.

According to Robinson’s nominator, “She has shown incredible passion for continuing education, serving her local community, and engaging in leadership in her professional associations, particularly the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA).”
