Dear CDM alumni and friends,

As we inch our way back to “normalcy” in Charleston, the members of the JBE CDM family have felt their spirits lifted. Each member of the dental community and our alumni have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic. Despite this sense of “normalcy” returning, we remain vigilant. Due to the executive order all university employees have returned to campus.

We were excited and humbled to be able to host our in-person annual Honors Convocation on Friday, May 14. On this day, each graduate, along with a guests, faculty, and staff, met at The Citadel to celebrate their outstanding achievement. It was truly a wonderful feeling having all of us join in celebration for the Class of 2021. Many of our students received awards/honors that afternoon recognizing all their hard work and dedication to the field of dentistry. Each member of the Class of 2021 not only surpassed all our high expectations but also taught us some very valuable lessons. This class will most certainly be missed, but we are so very excited to see what they accomplish out in the world. In addition, we plan to honor DMD 2022 with a White Coat Ceremony on June 11, 2021, an event that was cancelled last year, along with a celebration mid-year in 2022 to honor our DMD Class of 2020, as we had promised. Feel free to read through my remarks for this wonderful ceremony.

We are very excited to announce the high level of support we received towards our many scholarship funds, especially the Pay It Forward Scholarship Campaign. All of us at the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine wholeheartedly believe that the future of our profession belongs to the brightest, most gifted, and hardest working among us. This opportunity should never be denied because of the inability to afford dental school tuition, which has increased nationally more than four times over since 2003. With this in mind, we launched this scholarship campaign in hopes to increase opportunities around the globe. Excitingly, since the beginning of the silent phase on February 1, 2018, a total of $1,001,026 has been raised out of our $10 million goal! We would not have been able to accomplish that without the help and support from each of you. In total, the College of Dental Medicine has received over $3,188,290 as commitments toward our scholarship funds, which has helped change many lives for the better. Scholarships are the need of the hour, as they are the reasoning why we have not raised tuition and fees for four consecutive years since 2017.

We have an exciting, succinct, and ambitious new 2021-2025 Strategic Plan, along with continuing the fight against COVID-19. As articulated in our strategic plan, we will Lead, Innovate, and Inspire. We will do this by focusing on our student experiences, elevating our faculty and staff and creating a global impact by taking an entrepreneurial approach. Be sure to take a moment to review our webpage, which thoroughly outlines our mission, vision, and values.

Thank you for all your dedication and support throughout this past year and beyond. The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine would not be what it is today without each of its alumni, friends, and family.
