MUSC Alumni Awards College of Nursing 2021 Recipients

The MUSC Alumni Association is proud to recognize and honor alumni and friends of the MUSC College of Nursing annually for service, dedication and contributions made to the field of nursing.

The Young Alumnus/Alumna Award recognizes a graduate who has distinguished themselves professionally in the field of nursing. Nursing alumni who graduated within the last 10 years are eligible for this award. The 2021 recipient of the Young Alumnus/Alumna Award is Dr. Shakira Lynn ’15.

Dr. Shakira Lynn

Dr. Shakira Lynn was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. She is currently a nurse practitioner and employee health coordinator at the University of Georgia Student Health Center, a family nurse practitioner at Logistics Health Incorporated and serves as a nursing adjunct faculty member at Southern New Hampshire University.

She is a dedicated family nurse practitioner committed to practicing medicine using a holistic approach. She graduated with honors from Cedar Shoals High School in 2002. After graduation, she matriculated in the nursing program at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia, where she became a charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She then transferred to South Carolina State University where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with honors in 2008.

After graduating with her nursing degree, Lynn became a commissioned officer in the United States Army Nurse Corps. She then completed her Master of Science in Nursing degree at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing and became a family nurse practitioner in 2013.

In 2014, Lynn founded her nonprofit, Essentially Elegant, Inc., which serves communities through action and purposeful leadership. In 2015, Lynn earned her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree with an emphasis on clinical practice-oriented leadership training from the MUSC College of Nursing.

Lynn dedicates her time and expertise to multiple professional associations, serving as corresponding secretary for the United Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Georgia, and as nominations committee chair for the Georgia Nurses Association. She is also a volunteer panel member for Veterans Insights and has traveled to Honduras twice to provide care as a family nurse practitioner volunteer during medical mission trips.

Furthermore, Lynn conducted a research project titled, “Open Access Scheduling: Improving Access to Rural Healthcare,” which was published in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice in 2015. She worked on a mobile bus providing care for the homeless living in shelters across the Upstate of South Carolina, for which she was recognized as Clinician of the Year in 2017 by the chief executive officer at New Horizon Family Health Services.

Lynn’s accomplishments highlight her commitment and leadership toward making a difference in the lives of those for whom she provides nursing care.

The Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award recognizes an alumnus/alumna who has distinguished him/herself in the nursing profession and the community, and has brought honor to the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Nursing. Eligible nominees are graduates of 11 or more years. The 2021 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award is Dr. Terri Fowler ’06, ’08, ’11.

Dr. Terri Fowler

Dr. Terri Fowler has earned three degrees from the MUSC College of Nursing. She is a 2006 graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, a 2008 graduate of the Master of Science in Nursing, and a 2011 graduate of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice program. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Charleston.

Fowler holds positions as a nurse practitioner at Fetter Health Care Network, a hospitalist nurse practitioner at MUSC’s Division of Internal Medicine, and as a nurse practitioner at Partners in HealthCare. Additionally, Fowler is an associate professor for the MUSC College of Nursing Doctorate of Nursing Practice program, where she also mentors students. She held previous roles at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Primary Medical Associates and Trident Regional Medical Center.

Fowler is nationally recognized for her work in interprofessional (IP) education. She has led innovative initiatives to develop sustainable IP practice and education initiatives that meet the needs of patients and the community while providing robust hands-on clinical training to health care students.

She has been awarded two grants as a principal investigator (PI) and six grants as a collaborator. This work has led to the creation of IP didactic courses, practice positions for faculty members and sustainable community partnerships. Specifically providing IP clinical rotations to 132 students; 1,423 patient encounters to an uninsured patient population; practice sites for four faculty members and care valued at more than $173,000 to uninsured patients. She has led the integration of telehealth and the establishment of an IP faculty site focused on diabetes patients.

Fowler dedicates 20% of her time seeing patients with complex medical conditions and is an active preceptor. She is engaged with the MUSC and South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute as an external grant reviewer. She has received the MUSC Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, the South Carolina Palmetto Gold Award for Nursing and the Maralynne D. Mitcham IP Fellowship.

She has published 11 peer-reviewed manuscripts and led 22 presentations at national conferences. She is active on the East Cooper Community Outreach Health Care Committee as a board member. She is currently completing the MUSC Leaders Fellowship. Her work is substantial and sustained to ensure that MUSC graduates health care professionals well poised to address the health care needs in our state and beyond.

Her nominator shared that, “Dr. Fowler is a stellar example of an esteemed almuni and is most deserving of this recognition.”
