Incoming Students

Welcome to MUSC!

All MUSC students are required to submit documentation of immunity/immunization to certain vaccine-preventable conditions prior to arrival to campus. Maintaining these high standards is done to protect the safety of the students, staff, and patients. Obtaining the appropriate documentation (immunization records, immune antibody titers, TB testing) takes time, so please, begin gathering this information now.  These requirements need to be completed before you are cleared to begin semester coursework.  Please read the following information very carefully and complete the steps below

  • Please read through your [Pre-Matriculation Packet – link to packet] carefully and fill it out completely, attaching approved supporting documentation for all of the immunization, titer, and TB test dates provided. A summary of the required immunizations can be found on the first two pages of your [Pre-Matriculation Packet – link to packet].  Be sure to put your name at the top of each page.
  • Forty-five days prior to classes, you should receive your MUSC NetID and password. You will need these to log into LifeNet. LifeNet is an extension of Student Health’s electronic medical record system where we maintain your records over the course of your time at MUSC. Students will receive secure messaging regarding pertinent health information and compliance through LifeNet. Check this regularly for messages from our staff.

Once you have completed your [Pre-Matriculation Packet – link to packet] AND have gathered your supporting documentation, you will need to enter the dates of your immunizations, titers, and TB tests into LifeNet. You can access the data entry section in LifeNet by:

  • Logging into LifeNet
  • Clicking on “IMMUNIZATIONS” in the middle of the center column on the home screen
  • You will also need to upload a copy of your [Pre-Matriculation Packet – link to packet] and documentation into LifeNet by clicking the “ADD IMMUNIZATION RECORD” button at the bottom of the immunization screen
  • When you are done, click “Submit All” – we cannot view your information until you submit
  • Once you have entered your immunizations into LifeNet AND uploaded the supporting documentation, a member of our staff will review your immunization documentation and notify you via LifeNet whether or not you are compliant with MUSC immunization requirements. If you have missing requirements, our staff will contact you through secure messaging explaining what requirement are still needed. This review process typically takes 2-3 days, but due to heavy volume in the few weeks prior to the start of classes, a response may take as many as seven business days.  To avoid any delays in reviewing your immunization documentation, please complete this process prior to the posted deadline.  Once you submit your documentation, please monitor your LifeNet account for messages from Student Health regarding the status of your immunization compliance.
  • Available Pre-Matriculation Vaccines, Titers, & TB Screening Tests

For your convenience, Student Health offers lab orders or cost-effective lab vouchers for vaccines, titers, and TB screening tests. For students with insurance that covers the cost of these services, lab orders may be sent to an in-network provider and the student’s insurance plan will be billed. For students whose insurance will not cover the cost of a service, Student Health offers cost-effective lab vouchers that can be purchased in the SHS office or over the phone. Vouchers are taken to a local LabCorp site for the blood draw (map provided.) The lab results are sent directly to Student Health Services and our staff upload them to LifeNet and will send you a secure message with the results. Student Health Services offers the following for incoming students:

  • Pre-Matriculation Vaccines: Td, Tdap, Hepatitis B (Heplisav 2-series), and Meningococcal
  • TB Screening: In-office Tuberculin Skin Testing (PPD), and Quantiferon Gold & T-Spot vouchers (to be drawn at LabCorps)
  • Antibody Testing Vouchers: Rubeola IgG (Measles), Rubella IgG, Mumps IgG, Varicella IgG, and Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (Quantitative) *All titers are drawn at LabCorps]
  • Student Health Insurance

MUSC requires all students to maintain health insurance as a condition of enrollment.  All enrolled students may be seen at Student Health Services, regardless of your health insurance plan.  There are no charges for office visits or for in-office testing.  Insurance becomes necessary to cover services that cannot be provided in the office, which includes send out labs, imaging studies, specialty referrals, emergency medical care, surgical procedures, medications, and hospitalization.   You are encouraged to choose the insurance plan that best meets your needs.  This plan can be a personal private plan, a plan through your family/spouse, or the school-sponsored student health insurance plan through BlueCross BlueShield.  For more information about insurance and the MUSC-sponsored student insurance, go to: https://education.musc.edu/students/esl/finance-and-administration/student-health-insurance

Questions?

Have a question about something in your [Pre-Matriculation Packet – link to packet]? We are happy to assist you. If you have questions or concerns regarding immunization requirements please send an email to shsimmunizations@musc.edu and a member of our staff will review and respond. Due to the high volume of student matriculating throughout the year and other in-clinic responsibilities, we are unable to answer immunization questions by phone.
