AAMC Loan Repayment and Forgiveness Programs

AAMC provides a searchable data base which lists information about state and federal loan repayment programs for medical and other health professions students.

ADEA Loan Forgiveness Programs

American Dental Education Association (ADEA) provides a searchable data base which lists information about state and federal loan repayment programs for dental students

Armed Forces Reserve Loan Repayment Program

Various branches of the military offer loan-repayment programs which provide repayment of students’ loans in exchange for a service commitment in the military. Faculty Loan Repayment

HRSA offers up to $40,000 in loan repayment assistance for eligible health professionals who commit to working as a faculty member at an approved health professions school for a minimum of two years.

Income Driven Loan Forgiveness (IDR)

Student Loan Forgiveness which occurs when you’ve reached the maximum repayment period. Forgiven amounts are taxable by the IRS.

Indian Health Loan Repayment (LRP)

The LRP offers up to $40,000 to IHS clinicians who agree to serve in health care facilities serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities for a minimum of two years.

National Health Service Corps

NHSC offers primary care medical, dental and mental and behavioral health care providers the opportunity to have their student loans repaid in exchange for working at an NHSC-approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Amounts vary upon the need of the community in which the provider works as defined by HRSA’s Health Professional Shortage Area Score (HPSA).

National Institute of Health (NIH)

NIH offers a number of loan repayment programs up to $35,000 per year for a total of $70,000 for clinicians conducting research outside of NIH (Extramural) in exchange for a minimum two year commitment working in one of the following areas:

  • Clinical research
  • Clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Pediatric research
  • Health disparities research
  • Contraception and infertility research

Nurse Corps

Nurse Corps offers up to 85% of unpaid nursing educational loans for Registered Nurses (RN’s), Nurse Faculty and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in exchange for a minimum three year service commitment working in a Critical Shortage Facility or serving as a nurse faculty in an eligible school of nursing.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on eligible Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments and repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

Rural Dentist Loan Forgiveness Program

The South Carolina Rural Dentist Program offers loan repayment assistance to dentists who serve in designated HPSAs, or those who serve on the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina’s dental program. Priority is given to applicants who intend to put down roots in their practice area and stay beyond the funding period, both in the community and in their form of practice. Loan amounts may vary.

Rural Practice Loan Forgiveness Program 

(existing recipients only)

The State of South Carolina faces a significant shortage of healthcare providers. In exchange for a service commitment to practice in South Carolina, the program awards loan forgiveness for:

  • Medical students (minimum four year commitment) for $150,000.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse students (minimum three year commitment) for $40,000
  • Physician Assistant students (minimum three year commitment) for $40,000

Students to Service Loan Repayment Program

NHSC offers students in their last year of medical, nursing or dental school loan repayment assistance up to $120,000.00 in exchange for providing three-years of full-time clinical practice at an NHSC approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). 

VA Employee Loan Repayment Resources       

The Veterans Health Administration offers and Educational Debt Reduction (Reimbursement Program) and Student Loan Repayment Program in exchange for a service commitment working in specific, difficult to recruit direct patient care positions.
