F-1 students are expected to complete their studies by the program end date on form I-20. However, if you will complete your program earlier than this date, then you must notify CGH so that your SEVIS record and I-20 can be adjusted accordingly. If you will be completing your program earlier than the end date on your I-20, you must provide CGH with a letter from your academic advisor indicating your anticipated program completion and/or graduation date.
Once you have completed your program of study, you are permitted to remain in the US for 60 days following the program completion date. This grace period is intended for you to be able to settle your affairs in the US and prepare to return to your home country. You are also permitted to travel within the US during this grace period. During the 60-day grace period, you cannot do the following:
- Apply for re-entry into the US in F-1 status
- Apply for a program extension
- Work or study
If you wish to apply for post-completion OPT employment authorization, refer to the Employment and Practical Training page for more information.
